Leagues & Tournament Information

Definitions:

A "Tournament" is a one time event.  Local tournaments usually consist of individual's playing against each other.  Sometimes tournaments will be played in the scotch doubles format, which means teams consisting of Two People.  Tournaments can be single elimination (you lose once, your out) or double elimination (after losing once, you have a second chance).  Tournaments have a entry fee, and the money is paid back out to the top winners.  The number of entries usually determines how many places are paid out to the winners.  Sometimes the host bar will offer "added" money to the winning pot.

A "League" is a meeting of teams once a week for a set amount of time (season).  The season  usually lasts about 16 weeks.  Teams usually range from 3 to 5 players, and substitutes are allowed on your roster.  The payout to leagues depends on the league you are on.  Leagues can be for trophies, cash, trips, or other prizes designated.  Leagues can be "traveling" leagues, where you are at your home bar one week, then travel to another bar the following week; or they can be "in house" leagues, where you play at your home bar every week.  Different bars offer different "benefits" to their home teams.

   APA Leagues

American Poolplayers Association hosts a variety of leagues in San Antonio.  One of the keys to the success of the American Poolplayers Association is The Equalizer®, the unique handicapping and scoring system that makes it possible for players of different playing abilities -- especially novices and beginners -- to compete on an equal basis, much like they do in golf and bowling. The Equalizer® uses a formula that measures a player's ability. The result is a handicap of how many games a player must win to capture a match in 8-Ball or the number of points a player must earn to win a match in the 9-Ball format.

Clicks hosts APA teams on Sunday afternoons (combination 8 and 9 ball) , Monday nights (9ball only), and Wednesday nights (8ball only).  APA teams usually consist of 5-8 players (5play in a night, up to 3 subs allowed).  The dues are $7 week per player, and there is a $25 annual fee paid to the APA.    Teams competing in APA weekly League play can advance to their Local Team Championships and then to Las Vegas for the APA National Team Championships in August. Most APA divisions
are cash back leagues.
